ELEVATION MEASUREMENT FOR SUSTAINABLE ECOSYSTEM DESIGN MADE EASY AND AFFORDABLE
HOW IT WORKS
-
Switch on both devices (calibration unit and altimeter display unit)
-
The calibration unit is stationary, creating the 0 point
-
Walk thru the landscape and read the elevations from the display
-
The calibration unit and altimeter display unit can communicate wireless over max. 80 meters (the calibration unit can be re-positioned for mapping larger pieces of land)
-
Fast operation - One person operation
-
Out of sight measurements are possible - The devices are working also in forested, uncleared land
-
The measurement precision is limited to ±0.1 meters, relative to the initial (calibration) position (this is a barometric altimeter so this is the maximum achievable precision for practical measurements in real conditions)
-
Switch for selecting meters or inches measurement
-
Target price for the assembled modules around 100$

HOW TO MAKE A (FRUIT) FOREST
-
For mitigating the climate change
-
As a personal retreat
-
Commercial - for fruit / timber / mushrooms / fish etc.
-
Established in 5 to 10 years with the lowest effort possible
-
This tutorial is temperate zone specific
GET A PIECE OF LAND
Fence it against rabbits and deer until trees get established
A cheap fence will do - to last only for a few years until the trees get established
Find out the LOWEST POINT of the land with the ALTIMETER
All the water from the land will drain here
If needed, Swales / Keyline Design / Draining Ditches are easy to implement using this ALTIMETER
With an excavator make a small pond
Now you have water to establish your forest. Watering is helpful in the first years in the drought periods
Plant densely like in a forest.
In the first years the small trees will shelter and support each other.
You can thin later and use the thinned trunks for growing mushrooms, firewood, mulch etc.
Fight the weeds ONLY near the newly planted tree trunks
Leave all debris on the forest floor. The weeds that are not close to the tree trunk protect the tree from winds and sun. The debris will decompose in time and increase the soil fertility, like in a typical forest floor. Also this litter layer will act as a rain water harvesting reservoir
Do not use the Weed Wacker, as it is the major cause of tree death in an orchard. Using hand tools will make you strong and healthy and will not consume any fossil fuel
If you have really invasive weeds, you will need to stop it by:
Making a SHEET MULCH WEED BARRIER that can be either:
-
cardboard layer
-
thick newspaper layer
-
plastic foil
-
thick local mulch
-
piles of stones, etc.
Keep the area close to the tree trunk (about 0.3 m radius) cleared soil, cultivated
NOW YOU HAVE YOUR FOREST AND POND
